Under the Trump administration, cruelty and discrimination against immigrants has skyrocketed. Trump preaches that Muslims are terrorists, that Mexicans are criminals and rapists, and overall that immigrants have a negative impact on the United States. But this is not true. Evidence shows that immigration leads to more innovation, a more educated workforce, and overall higher economic productivity. Immigrants have been present throughout the entire history of the United States, and have always played an important role in our society.

A major goal of the Trump administration has been to reduce immigration from Central America, both legal and unauthorized. Trump’s hardline immigration policies have forced tens of thousands of migrants to wait along the border of Mexico, rather than enter the U.S. while their claim for asylum is being processed. The migrants face growing fear and panic every day that they are forced to stay in possibly dangerous environments. Donald Trump’s policies have reduced legal immigration by half, and he has no plans to stop there. If Donald Trump is reelected president, he will try to ensure that as few immigrants enter the United States as possible.

In addition, Donald Trump has been cracking down on unauthorized immigration in the United States. In 2018 alone, he deported 337, 287 undocumented immigrants. Throughout this process, Donald Trump's administration separated more than 4,000 young children from their families at the border. These children were held in cages as they were being processed for deportation. In addition, Trump has overturned protection for Dreamers (thousands of people who were brought to the U.S. without authorization when they were very young) as well as instructed ICE to focus on arresting any undocumented immigrant (under the Obama administration ICE focused on immigrants with criminal records). Donald Trump’s deportation policies are inhumane and outright disgusting.

Joe Biden plans to provide a path to securing citizenship for immigrants that are undocumented. In addition, he will reverse many of the harmful restrictions that Donald Trump has placed on immigration in order to make it easier for immigrants to enter the U.S. He also plans to make DACA (Deferred Actions for Childhood Arrivals program) permanent, as well as make visas more accessible to working immigrants.

When it comes to refugees, Trump’s policies are especially harmful. He has banned immigration from many predominantly Muslim countries, and has reduced the number of refugees coming from the Middle East significantly. The Trump administration has lowered the annual cap on refugees into record lows as it continues its assault on immigrants. Biden has plans to boost the number of refugees entering the country close to what it was under the Obama administration. Biden believes that the United States should serve as a beacon of hope to other countries, while Trump believes that it should shut others out.

It is impossible to be proud of Donald Trump’s America. This is supposed to be the land of opportunity, where hardworking immigrants can come and make a better life for themselves. America was founded by immigrants leaving their home in search of a higher quality of life. We have to think about what we want our legacy to be. Do we want to be remembered as the generation who shut out immigrants and refugees? Or as the generation who opened their borders to accept all kinds of people in order to make our country stronger. Donald Trump plays to our fears and tries to make immigrants the enemy in order to splinter and divide the American people. A leader should be uniting their people, not turning them against each other. Joe Biden is the leader who will bring together all Americans, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or any factor that may divide us.
